The Mirror is considered to be a precursor to the Alcoholics Anonymous Suite (also known as the Twelve Step Suite), devised by drummer Mike Portnoy. The lyrics in the songs are based around his own struggles to overcome alcohol addiction.
The Mirror is one of the heavier songs on the Awake album, and it is notable for it's complex time signature patterns. The intro, for example has drums and guitars playing different time signatures.
